Plans

A Question that is often asked is how to obtain plans for Jodel aircraft. Well, there are four options for plans:

1) Contact Avions Jodel in France. The plans used to be supplied through SAB, but they bankrupted in 2001. The rights to the plans belong to Mme Delemontez, the daughter of M. Delemontez. Please let Mme Delemontez know that you got her address from this site :-)

The plans are NOT entirely complete, as hinges and landing gear plans are often not included (depending on model). More on this later. Plans are in French bit since there aren't too many written details (and no building instructions), this should not be too much of a problem, just buy a good dictionary. Mme Delemontez takes no Credit cards, but Euro checks or money orders are accepted.

2) Contact Airworld in the UK. They are the British agent for Avions Jodel. They speak English and take Credit cards. Same plans as Avions Jodel.

3) Contact Frank Rogers in Australia. He's without any doubt the single one person responsible for the popularity of the Jodel in Australia. Frank has redrawn the SAB plans. These plans are in English and of probably better quality than the SAB originals. Plans DO include the missing landing gear etc. details. Frank also sells plans for some slight modifications and also sells partial plans (like only landing gear).

4) Contact Falconar in Canada. (http://www.falconaravia.com) These are NOT Jodels, but inspired by them. Check the Falconar page for more info.

Robin aviation

The DR series of Jodels are Robins have been built by SAN in Bernay and CEA in Darois. SAN no longer exists, but CEA does, under the name of Robin aviation, still producing bent-wing DR400's and DR500's. Robin has a web site: http://www.robinaviation.com, containing all the details one could be interested in.

Exhaust system (1)

A report from a Jodel flyer who ordered a new exhaust system (and again, I don't have any personal experience with them):

My 1050 is currently having a couple of new exhausts fitted by Richard Yates of Sibsey near Boston, Lincs. at a cost of £350. I haven't seen them yet, but it sounds like good value... I understand he gets them made to order but delivery time is still far better than ordering from France via Airworld. A pair bought for a D120 from France a couple of years ago took several months to appear and then weren't very well made - they also cost over £900!

I also happen to know Richard does/used to build u/c legs of all varieties.

You can contact him on: 01205 750601 or e-mail Richard Yates [Yatesaviation@FSBDial.co.uk]

Exhaust system (2)

Another report from a Jodel flyer:

If it is of any assistance I have recently purchased an exhaust for the port side on my DR221 (the exhaust is the same for either an 0-235 or 0-320). I found that C.S.E. were slightly cheaper (but the price was still telephone numbers) than any other supplier in the UK and could offer a better guarantee. CSE are official UK Robin parts supplier.

The following addresses appeared on the packaging and documentation which may be of assistance. If anyone has any success approaching these companies direct perhaps they could let the rest of us know.

Address on warranty:

Asco Aviation Service Centre,
1 Route de Troyes
21121 Darois
France
Tel + 33(0) 380 35 61 98
Fax +33 (0) 380 35 60 58

Address on JAR Form 1 Constructions Aeronautiques De Bourgogne at same address as above

Address on exhaust packaging:

Applications Et Precisions Industrielles
Tolerie De Precision Et Aeronautique
49070 Saint-Lambert-La-Potherie
Tel: 02 41 77 53 66
Fax:02 41 77 57 99

From the above it seems that the exhaust passed through several suppliers before I purchased it, no doubt all putting their 'mark up' on the price.

Steve

Canopies (1)

Bob Reece,
The Old School,
Norton (Near Worcester),
WR5 2PT
UK
Phone number +44 1905 821334

Is said to have moulds for just about everything and a stock of the more common requests. He can make a screen in a few days. Windscreen £200 about 3 years ago. The doors were £100 each, according to a fellow Jodeller who purchased these items from him.

Recent information suggests that Bob is no longer selling canopies directly. Airworld however has a few of Bob's canopies in stock. See the plans section for address details of airworld.

Wood (1)

http://sites.netscape.net/rawresources/homepage is the web site of R.A.W. Resources Inc, a Canadian company that sells aircraft grade wood. Until recently, I had no experience with them. After I placed their web address on this site, however, I was contacted by Richard Walton, their president. Could they send me a sample package of wood for inspection and consideration? Naturally, I didn't decline. I've got the wood right here. Wow! With wood like this, covering the aircraft with fabric is a shame! Excellent quality throughout. I am impressed.

I still don't know they do in everyday life, and how well their after sales service is, etc., but if their friendlyness and the wood quality can be regarded a yardstick, then I don't have any hesitation recommending them.

I have not dealt with them personally, but have heard good reports from fellow Jodel builders.

Wood (3)

A third source would be Aircraft Spruce & Specialty (www.aircraft-spruce.com) in the USA. They sell just about anything one could ever need to build or maintain an aircraft, including wood. This is what a fellow Jodel builder had to say about them:

The Sitka for my 1050 was supplied by Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co in the USA and I have to say that every inch was superb. Even the packing used around the order has proved to be A1 grade and has been used for the spar frame strengtheners. The order was administered by the UK office which is run by David and Pat Dawson. The delivery was flown over from LA to Heathrow and I picked it up from a cargo handling company near Heathrow. The longest lengths they supplied were 4.7 metres of 18mm square for the fuselage longerons so some thought is needed as to how to get the package home once you have rescued it from the handlers. It was very well packaged but I do know of stories where orders are dropped en route so if you can check the order before signing, do so.

The export company was Adcom based in LA and they can be found through the net. I guess Aicraft S and S may use different companies but e mail them if you like. I did apply for 'end use relief' with Customs and Excise in the UK because i will not be using the material for professional purposes and that has saved me the VAT from the American side.

Import cost was approx 50% of the timber, but I now have all the Sitka I need for ribs, spar, fuselage and tailfeathers for £900 including import. Everything is precut section wise which helps a great deal and boy are they accurate. All the timber is supplied PAR or 'planed all round' and I can't wait to get it all round my plane !! Dave.

Jaeger instruments and tacho cables

For connaisseurs, the ultimate in Jodel instrumentation would have to be a collection of Jaeger instruments. A company in France is specialized in these instruments. On top of that, they construct cables for tachometers and are the official supplier for Robin, Mudry, Socata and Asco. The address is:

Bardy Euro instumentation - Barflex,

Jodel overhauls

Christian Eibicht from Switserland reported the following:

An other adress I would like to suggest for all Jodel owners is the following one:

DAeS
Development Aeronautique et Services
Aerodrome de Dijon Darois
21121 Darois

This is a former part of the Robin-Manufacturer which has been separated by a Managment-Buy-Out. While being within Robin they did all the restaurations of the wooden Robins. And that is what they do know as well.

From our Aero-Club of our Airport Birrfeld they restaured so far 2 DR300 (towing machines of our School), 2 Kapitän and our Sicile. They do a really great work for a resonable price. The representative (and one of the two owners of the shop) is a Monsieur Eicher, and I think he is a Jodel-Enthusiast as well.

Book on Jodels

Buy this book, if you can read french, that is.

A number of pictures on this web site are taken from a book on Jodels that has been written by Xavier Massé (ISBN number 2-7233-0520-1). As far as I know, this is the only book on the subject that is (still) on the market today. It is published by NEL, which stands for Nouvelles Editons Latines, in Paris. If you like Jodels and master the French language, I recommend reading this book.

Nouveau Editions Latines
1 Rue Palatine
75006 Paris
Phone: +33 1 43 54 77 42
Fax: +33 1 43 29 69 81
www:
http://www.dossiers-aero.com

Hope that by plugging their book, they will not sue me for copyrights on the photo's ;-) I meant what I said though.

Incidentally, this book has been translated to English and is available on CD-ROM through frogers@alphalink.com.au for Australia and New Zealand and CGRAHAM978@aol.com for the rest of the world.

Book on Robin aircraft

From the same author and publisher, a book on Robin aircraft recently arrived. This book covers the Robin range, starting from the three seater Jodel-Robin DR100 predecessor, to the DR500.

Incidentally, the book can also be ordered online at http://www.pbs.volez.com. Follow the "avions" link on the left side of the screen. I don't have any experience with them, so don't blame me if they don't deliver.
